FREE screening March 19 - presented by the Italian Cultural Institute in Miami

DOCUMENTARY: A coach as father (Un coach come padre, 2023),
by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory

A special screening of the documentary A coach as father (Un coach come padre, 2023) will be offered by the Italian Cultural Institute in Miami on March 19, in the presence of the director and screenwriter Massimiliano Finazzer Flory.

An authentic story inspired by basketball, also embellished by footage of Sandro Gamba and Michael Jordan, as well as Bill Clinton’s tribute to Cesare Rubini, on the occasion of his induction into the Hall of Fame.

In the U.S. Basketball Hall of Fame there is also Italy, with three sportsmen representing a history of sufferings, successes, dreams: the most winning coach, Sandro Gamba, then Cesare Rubini and Dino Meneghin. This is an all-Italian story revolving around the relationship between war and sport, between a coach and his boys.

The documentary follows the life of Sandro Gamba, beginning when, as a 12-year-old in 1945, he is wounded in the hand in the last remnants of the war. According to doctors, the hand seems doomed, but recovery begins. The child exercises first with a tennis ball, then thanks to American officers tries rehabilitation with a basketball. The suffering of the war will give way to success in sports, up to the Gold Medal won by Italy’s basketball team at the 1983 European Championships, just under the guidance of Mr. Gamba. And now everything is told by a man who’s 91 years old, who recounts his life on a playground in the Milanese suburbs, among multi-ethnic boys all united by their passion.

The documentary will be accompanied by the video contributions of Danilo Gallinari, one of the longest-serving Italian players in the NBA, and of Ettore Messina, Italian coach who followed in Sandro Gamba’s footsteps as his apprentice. A Q&A session with director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory and a reception will follow the screening.

Original Italian version with English subtitles.
