This is the true story of Luca, a single Catholic man who in 2017 adopted Alba, a Down’s syndrome child left in hospital shortly after being born. Luca, played by a passionate Pierluigi Gigante, is a young, gay, Catholic Neapolitan man from a wealthy, middle-class family who’s not only driven by a desperate urge to become a father, he also shows a clear propensity for caregiving. While enlisted in a seminary with a view to becoming a priest, he took part in various missions in Africa, and he’s now a volunteer in a home for people with disabilities. More than thirty heterosexual families rejected Alba before the court decided to entrust her to him: with him, the legal foster care register for singles was inaugurated in Italy. Luca was, in fact, the first case in Italy of a single, homosexual person succeeding in adopting a daughter. But his was not a charitable gesture: he simply wanted a family. Luca Trapanese (who is now a Counselor for Naples’ Municipal Welfare Department) first shared his journey to become a father to Alba in a book he wrote with Luca Mercadante.
